Summary | 0002034: Suggestion for the installation: include also compiled packages
Description | Many people (including me) have problems in making the packages during the installation process, due to many reasons (long paths, compilation problems, people that are not so skilled, ...). What do you think about distributing also the compiled packages and an installation program that only installs and registers its without build ?

This is really unlikely, the compiled packages are really big and do not compress well. Further, that would require us to have access to all supported platforms which we do not necessariliy have all the time. For instance, the C++ Builder 6 Personal packages cannot be tested because none of us has C6p installed. Finally, we prefer to distribute the sources because this leaves the options to people to set various options such as the USE_JVCL, USE_GIF (law related issues) and DEBUG mode. I'm convinced that distributing the source and asking users to compile it leads to faster problems resolutions compared to binary distribution. |

I totally agree with OBones |

I expected these answers and I agree with you. My intention was to stimulate you in improving the installation process in order to make it as usable as possible also to non-expert people. Thank you for paying attention to my note. |

Just a side note on "non expert" users. The intended audience of the JCL/JVCL is "developers". This means that those people have a minimal knowledge of their PC and the required steps to go through an installation process. I'm not saying they need to know how to develop or debug a component, but they must at least know what an environment variable is and how to read a readme file. And for those who really can't figure out how to do things, then there still is the forum. I'm quite confident that 99% of the installations are going ok, it is just that we mostly hear from those that have a problem. I'm not complaining about that, it's just part of the process. |

This does not need any fix, the issue is now closed |
